In the article, "The Complex Ways of Coexistence", I wrote that the refugees in Serbia are accepted by the general population on a charitable basis. In the November 5th issue of the New York Times, I read a report from Belgrade stating that the Krajina Serbs are not welcomed by the population, they have no citizenship, no right to work, the level of misery and suicide rate is high. In light of this, I obviously gave too rosy a picture of the situation. I took my information from Serbian sources; I liked giving space in Vagabond to the Serbs in order to counterbalance the media's anti-Serbian hysteria. But for truly objective information we would need a neutral source which doesn't exist in this conflict. We have to grope in a trial and error situation. WM

Have you really resolved the mystery of conscious thought - in my innocence I had believed that was one of the insolubles. The interaction between the mind and the brain still seems to be unknown in spite of all the work which has been done of recent years. Certainly I would agree that our use of words conditions our thoughts and that each language generates a different, often a very different culture, leading to widely differing human values but my study has not taken me any further than that.
I believe there are no Absolute Values but if words could be sufficiently closely defined in a meaningful way it might seem possible to reach some kind of consensus on the meaning of certain basic concepts such as `decent`, `fair` and `seemly`. At the moment I consider that as such words are interpreted by each individual according to their particular and unique set of values there can only be some kind of overall agreement but that is far from exact or precise. I would welcome your comments.

As a matter of fact, not only have I not tried to approach this mystery, but in my view the separation of words and thoughts deepens the mystery. If we must use words, forever inaccessible to our thoughts as I conclude in my article, then we may never have a clue about how we operate. I think the basic concepts you mention are part of cultural patterns. WM

Just bumped into your e-zine Vagabond. Caught my attention because of the title, having always felt myself to be a bit of a vagabond I guess. I take the time for a quick note to say just two things, 1) nice zine keep it up, and 2) what it's missing, perhaps deliberately, who am I to guess, is any form of short intro or editorial confessing just what the hell it's all about. The only way to work that out currently is to browse a little in depth and read an article or two or three and build a picture in your mind. For which reason piles and piles and piles of people in my mind will never stop here. Which is a way of saying I bumped into this site months ago and only now finally bumped into it again on my bookmarks with enough time up my sleeve to explore it. Anyway, all the same, a nice site, keep it up, I shall drop by once in a while I'm sure to catch some ramblings ...
