About the Jews, Again

By William Markiewicz

I know that we have often discussed Jewish problems in Vagabond, but a recent small event again caught my attention. I started to chat with a taxi driver who noticed my accent. He was Canadian Indian and he said: “I hope you are not a Jew!” I had heard about galloping anti-Semitism among Indians in Canada, America, even in Argentina. In the Buenos Aires "Paseo" where people gather to discuss politics, an Argentinian Indian harangued the laughing crowd, accusing Jews of being among them. One of his companions (white) supported the exhausted speaker by giving him a backrub. The Indian probably never saw Jews in his life, so why? Perhaps he is among those who hunt somebody even weaker than they are… If the Neanderthal existed today, he would probably despise the Jews.

Jews have a reputation for intelligence but in the Darwinian universe it isn’t intelligence that counts but power. In every democratic country, Jews live under neutral governments, but they themselves have no power because real power in each country belongs to police and army and neither is very friendly to the Jews. Only in Israel can the Jews claim to have the government, police and army on their side. Even in the WW2 era, among those who fought the Nazis, anti-Semitism was no less strong than the Nazi version. They didn’t kill the Jews – they let the Nazis do it. Had they wanted to help the Jews they would have bombed all those railways that led to the gas chambers. They knew perfectly well what was going on. After the war, anti-Semitism didn’t diminish; it even increased. In the Darwinian universe, the weaker you are the more you are despised. The more you are despised, the more you are hated.

“We will not eternally shed tears for the Jews“ -- that's a phrase I’ve often heard among general populations. Pogroms always spark in the subconscious collective mind. Maybe when the Jews become more united, more ready to defend themselves, they will disregard anti-Semites and anti-Semitism. In Israel they are united but it isn’t enough to be united in one spot for it to reflect in the universe.
