How Many Divisions ...? ..., Burnout? ...

Sometimes I don't receive an answer to my request to publish a letter and I don't know how to interpret it. So I've decided to simplify things and not oblige readers to answer. The most recent letters are at the top of the page.

Re: How Many Divisions Have the Geese or Chimpazees? (This issue)

William,
Why are you so dark in your predictions? Yes, there will always be some hidden corner where a monster will perpetrate evil deeds like torturing animals or imprisoning children. We just read about the pervert who kept his daugher and their children prisoners in a sterile dungeon. There will always be some country that is 'developing' and will not accept our standards however perfect we think they are. But look how far we have come. HERE children don't work in factories. HERE you can go to jail for certain cruelty to animals. We have a long way to go. We go forward, we drop back. There will always be tender hearts to protest the cruelty we see.

Burnout?

Markiewicz: "As my contribution to Vagabond is now at least capricious, more than ever Vagabond's vitality supports itself through visitors' contributions. I invite all interested not to hesitate, and give proofs that Vagabond doesn't necessarily depend totally on the main contributor -- myself. I never had a clear conception of Vagabond's role when I spontaneously filled its pages. Maybe as a more distant observer I will retrieve my connections and my verve. I would enjoy any suggestions. Please consider that about 400 words would be the most welcomed length for the readers."

Paul: Wow! Sounds like burnout. I suspect you care too deeply about the things you write about. But even if your feelings were frivolous, I suspect you hate repetition. I know I do. So once you have said all that you wish, there is no more left to say.

That is a rough place to be. The new readers are looking for fresh writing. You hate repeating old ideas. Communication breaks down. You need to find new ways to say the same things, or change your way of thinking.

That is what happened to me. I used to write for Ron Hoeflin, but at some point, I had no more to say. I think that approach is wrong, but I am not sure what to do about it. I think maybe switching to fiction to provide examples would be a good start. But -- it also sounds like a lot of work.

Paul - I just went to the computer and had the surprise of your email. Thanks for the much needed support! For me to express myself is a necessity. I have no hobbies, I'm more 'producer' than 'consumer.' Facts motivate me, therefore fiction is the harder alternative for me. I hope some manna from heaven shows up from time to time. The void doesn't nourish me, and I'll try to learn to be grateful for any crumb to come. I hope you will find a way that works for you. Cheers - William
