OPEN BOUQUET (July - August)

(As other short items may follow, I've decided to group them together.)

“Fictional Sovereignties” (8/24)
The "Moscow Times" (August 24th) carries an article titled “Fictional Sovereignties” by Robert Skidelsky, member of the British House of Lords. Skidelsky claims that global cooperation is more practical among states than among nations. Therefore he opposes independence of new small states which promises corruption and global anarchy.

If the new world powers, composed mostly of immigrants, are presently successfully multi ethnic, we cannot say the same about the old country multi - national states where small ethnies have fought for centuries for independence. Robert Skidelski forgot to mention that only physical power maintains peace where smaller ethnies are herded into multi ethnic states.

Question and Answer (8/21)
In a conversation about my article, “What is Morality?”, my friend asked me: “If religions are brought to humanity by empathetic gurus, then why are religions so bloodthirsty?” My answer: “Because, in societies, the Darwinians always have the last word. Their main argument is power.”

How Could He Not Have Known? (8/03)
Karlheinz Schreiber declared yesterday that his extradition to Germany is politically motivated. Of course! Smart as he is, how could he not know that this outcome was unavoidable from the start? Had he thought of it before, the whole affair might have been handled differently. Schreiber thought in a linear way that the matter was about right and wrong. It may be so when the level among adversaries is more or less equal. Ordinary citizens cannot win a case against the leader of the nation, whether under totalitarianism or democracy. Why is that so? Because the leader, past or present, carries the prestige of the country. So he cannot be diminished by a commoner because the consequences for the whole country may be incalculable, if not in the present then in some unknown future. History doesn't forget and disillusion would spread through every strata of society. Therefore, nations prefer that the leader be a successful criminal on the global level than a recognized crook losing a case brought by an ordinary person. That's how the Darwinian universe unveils itself in its reality.

"The Cultural War" (7/26)
On one mailing list under the above title the author quotes an excerpt from the Boston-based Gay Community News, February 1987 issue: "We shall sodomize your sons, emblems of your feeble masculinity, of your shallow dreams and vulgar lies. ... Your sons shall become our minions and do our bidding. They will be recast in our image. They will come to crave and adore us." In the rest of the quoted text, the author of the email clearly defends Christian values. This is what I answered:

I am as straight as you are, but the idiotic statement of the Boston Gay Community News is only proof of our freedom which sense you seem to ignore. To be able to say the wrong thing is also freedom. Change the definition from "Christian" to "Muslim" and Ayatolla bin Laden could sign it.

"USA - Russia: Historic Accord" (7/02)
Under this title, the Swiss Journal, Le Matin, reports that negotiations between USA's Obama and Russia's Medvedev will soon make possible the transit of American military material to Afghanistan. Here we witness classical dirty politics of the giants over the heads of the weak. Russia has no business in Afghanistan and a close look shows Obama has no business there either. It's a buddy-buddy agreement to eclipse past differences as a step towards lasting peace. Afghanistan was chosen as a convenient scapegoat. The great guilty of September 11th have never been definitely found. So, a self-appointed authority says Afghanistan is guilty and must pay, a puppet for reconciliation of two former enemies.
