If I remember correctly, in 1943 there was a German plan to deport Poles from Poland to Siberia and to settle Poland with Dutch and German peasants. As they didn't expect to have enough to fill Poland with them, they planned to plant millions of trees in Poland so Poland would become a giant forest with Dutch and German settlers. This reminds me a little bit of what Sharon does in Palestinian territory.

Mr. Shimon Peres raised an interesting question when he addressed the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe...
"At Camp David, our former Prime Minister Barak and President Clinton offered the Palestinians the return of not all their land but of between 96% and 97% of it. They could have negotiated over the remaining 2% or 3%. It is hard for Israel and the Israelis to understand why the Palestinians rejected that offer. What went wrong?"
While the Israelis wondered why they were still fighting over a small piece of local land, the Palestinians were preparing to engage in a more complex global power struggle.
The leaders of Arab nations who fund the Palestinian struggle effectively sidestepped the option of peaceful negotiation to pursue an extreme agenda. They have corrupted their Muslim faith with an interpretation so that hunger is replaced with explosives instead of food and anger is replaced with the pain of loss as more people die. These leaders are not elected, they are responsible for countless atrocities against women and they've perpetuated destructive hate crimes around the world. Frankly, I don't want these wealthy despots getting any more powerful than they already are. I believe in democracy. I want women's rights. I do not want to be terrorized. In the end, I will benefit if Israel is successful at disrupting any part of their organization.
However, the Palestinians are impoverished and oppressed and their desperate actions resonate through the airwaves causing deep feelings of pity. My sympathies relieve the guilt I share with other armchair critics who have the luxury of being able to turn the channel. What went wrong? We are a global village without global poverty relief, without global standards of education, and with no way to enforce democracy and global liberties. Our current systems of government are outdated, our borders are useless, and wars are not won on the battlefield any more. Welcome to the new world.

I confess that the meaning of the title, "The New World Starts with Israel", escapes me. In my view no outsider understands why Arafat was more inflexible with Barak than he was with Rabin. Was he afraid to die like Rabin? In this case he showed that he doesn't have the guts of a statesman. As there is nobody to replace Arafat among the Palestinians, then the negotiations -- or war -- have to continue with him. The best thing to do would be to forget the past and start negotiations again at the point where they were interrupted with Barak. But Sharon is not Barak; he wants to exploit Afarat's blunder and weakness to the maximum. He wants to cover the Palestinian territory with Israeli settlements and leave the conflict eternally open. Like all warlords he lives from day to day, exploiting his superiority. It's a typical practice in colonialism and neo-colonialism. Because of growing colonialism and imperialism among the industrial nations, disdain toward the weaker, including Palestinians, will continue. Tourism and other businesses in Israel will suffer but obviously Sharon believes that Israel can take it. WM
I think I have a detail to add to your debate about Alexander the Great and the Jews. Alexander rewarded a number of the Jewish heroes who fought for him in Persia by establishing them on Crete. Their descendants remained on Crete until the Second World War, honored by the local population as the oldest aristocracy because they were knights of Alexander the Great. During the war, the local population tried to help them but the end of the war was marked by the demise of perhaps the oldest community in Europe. Some of them went to Israel but couldn't adapt, they were "too Greek." They dispersed throughout Greece or went to the United States and disappeared in the melting pot.

In Alexander the Great's army were soldiers of many nations. Some of them were Jews and they happened to be good. Your business with the Jews is none of my "fucking" business. WM
The answer is..... not enough, he did not finish his job correctly, if he would have, I believe that the earth would be a peaceful environment to live in, for every human being. The jews are the causes of problem concerning war and terrorism, it's all because of them...
One of those days, I wish that, all arab world gain up on jews to eliminate them from a planet that is not in need of them...

Around a year ago, visiting a friend in the hospital, I talked to one patient, an old-timer, who told me he was in the SS. I asked him: "Waffen SS (fighters), or Algemeine SS (terminators)?" He answered, "Waffen SS of course! Those Algemeine were gangsters." So, even those among the SS despised your buddies -- Jew killers. WM

I read your imaginary speech with great interest. I also intended to use
Emil Zola's famous words, to express my great frustration with how the
international media is showing a totally false picture of the
Israeli-Palestine conflict, and so in search for Zola's original work, I
found yours. In fact, just a few minutes ago I told my friends that the view
I have formed about the Bosnian war - where the Serbs of course are the bad
guys - may be totally wrong, because I see now how the media is conveying a
political agenda of their own rather than reflecting the facts. I have now
no idea about what really happened in Bosnia.
Did you find that writing the speech did have any impact on public opinion? Did you get any response? How and where did you publish it?
I'll be glad if you would write.

Noticeable impact on published opinions can only be obtained through the major media, and not in the form of letters to the editor which usually take up very little space and are often cut to dilute the meaning. In my experience, the web has a certain effect, but of course it is slow to build and necessarily limited. I know several people who, like you, changed their mind after reading another point of view but they represent a literal drop in the ocean.
Personally, I don't see a parallel between media reports about the Bosnian war and the Israeli-Palestinian war. If you remember, the war in Bosnia was presented in the form of testimonies and reports, hard to verify. In the Israeli-Palestinian war it's mostly pictures of the battlefront. In Bosnia, the journalists were received like cherished guests by the Muslim authorities who provided them with press releases which most of the journalists faithfully passed as fact to their readers while comfortably installed in the city. The Israeli soldiers chase away the reporters with clubs -- we've seen it. It's true that the forums on TV, analyses in the press and radio, don't favor the Israeli line. By chance, I came across an article of mine at one site. I will not name the article or the site's URL in order not to give them the publicity they may desire. My name was there but the article was cut without indicating that it was incomplete and no link or reference to Vagabond was given.
I emailed the host of the site to clarify that the article was an excerpt and requesting a link or at least a note as to where the article came from. There was no reply.
It is not worth spending time and money on it. I just wanted to inform anybody coming across an oddity like this to be aware that it was done without my knowledge. WM
(April 4th) The webmaster of the site wrote me that someone sent my article to him a year ago and he did not know the URL or that it was an excerpt. Now it has been corrected and I consider the matter settled. WM

Isn't it amazing that the George Carlin - the gross and mouthy comedian of the 70's and 80's...could write something so simple and possibly eloquent... and so very appropriate post 9/11. Some would say he is a genius at writing about the ironies and contradictions in our society.
