John Paul II's conservatism predominated in the Catholic Church. As you must know, the campaign to keep Quebec Canadian turned into a financial scandal that will make Canada more conservative. Bush's America is conservative. Iraq, thanks to America, becomes a fundamentalist nightmare.

Indeed, the world seems to be turning right. Concerning the more immediate issue of the Catholic Church's next steps, I discuss it in this issue in The Catholic Church on the Turbulent Waves of History WM
A week ago the portal of "Gazeta Wyborcza" in Poland indicated that I can count on 21% of the popular vote in the upcoming presidential election. This is more support than any of the other potential candidates currently have that are promoted by Polish media. For this reason I have received numerous calls from various reporters who are demanding a copy of my election program. For a good election program for ravished Poland is the most valued commodity this year.
Only a very naïve politician would present his election platform a few months before election. There is no penalty for theft of political ideas by those parties that have huge resources for media support. This is why political programs are always presented during the election campaign.
Nevertheless to satisfy my supporters and my enemies alike, I am obliged to explain my intentions in a manner that will not jeopardize my future election campaign.

When I was a young boy growing up during the harshest years of communism in Poland my family told me the following prophecy: "Poland will be free when there will be a Polish Pope and Chinaman will give water to his horse from Vistula river". In those days after eternal succession of Italian Popes it was unthinkable that one of out countrymen would be selected as a head of the Catholic church. But we Poles believe in miracles and miracles do happen. Poland was overjoyed when Karol Wojtyla became John Paul II and reigned for us 26 years.
When he left us the light went out in the world. He proved himself to be a figure of extraordinary courage, charisma and humanity. He made it plain from the day he became Pope that he intended to be more than a mere ceremonial figure. He said: "I think that God raised me to become pope to do something for the world." And that he did. In a secularizing, materialistic world that was forgetting about God he raised the spirit of the world and stood on guard of morality to prevent evil forces to destroy our values and reasons for living.

With the Presidential election in Poland later on this year, I have received many requests to present myself as a candidate one more time. For this reason I would like to explain my position the best way I can.
I took part in a spectacular election in 1990 as an independent candidate without any financial support from anyone or any organization. The official result was significant - 4 million people voted for me in both rounds. Even though we lost that election it was important that opposing views were heard and we could express our concerns with corruptive privatization, ugly speculation of Polish currency and the general lack of concern with unemployment. Poles have paid a very high price for losing that presidential election 15 years ago; some economists estimate it to be 150 billion dollars. If this years elections are lost, the post-communists will probably demand from Poles a much higher rent.

I feel compelled, being a student of politics, to react to an article on your web-site which states the possibility of 18 million murdered Jews in during WW2. 1st, the figue of six million was indeed streched considering the overwhelming extent of information pointing to the fact that Europe as a whole was home to no more than 4 million Jews in 1940 (before the mass-murders began). Even if the data of the Simon Wiesenthal organisation is taken as true (which we should reluctantly do, seeing as it is run by Jews, who were the victims in question, thus making their objectivity questionable), Europe was home to no more than 8 and a quarter million people, making your guesses of 12 million or 18 million dead very, very dangerous. Do not use the suffering of the dead as a political tool, else you may trigger new evils and hostility towards Jews. And the Jewish people have suffered more than enough as it is.

This is what I wrote in the text, "How Many Jews ...":
"In light of all this, I believe that the supposed six million may be only a tip of the iceberg. What was the real number of Jews killed? Twelve million? Eighteen million? We will never know." This "We will never know" is the final statement, not the randomly thrown out numbers which I included to make the point on incertitude.
As for your statement ..."you may trigger new evils and hostility towards Jews" you certainly know well that we live in the Darwinian universe, and it's up to the Jews to be able to handle those who are ready to "trigger new evils and hostility towards Jews."
How many Jews were in Europe before Hitler will always remain a mystery but it is certainly well in excess of those official numbers. I think I illustrated this sufficiently in my article. WM
The Swallowing Sea
Resting in potential:
Kinetic is cold and
Waiting, wrestling dead-locked
against itself;
letter by letter by
comma by colon we are
hammering out
waves of vision
into the swallowing sea:
Sea which surrounds
Intranquil but
always in submission;
each of us
hammering out
one single note
over and over,
Oblivious to the motion
Of the waves we create
Because all of this
Is on the outside of the
Inside;
hammering out
waves of vision into the
unending darkness, waves of
sight and sound to the
icy chill of empty night; the tales
of who we are and
who we became
and the chance is real
that the truth behind
the hammer's fall
falls upon no beating hearts
but our own.
