Syria? (6/21)
I was questioned – why didn’t I mention Syria in my recent text about Arab Spring? What to write? Amidst the horror an eerie status quo remains. Assad, among the Middle East despots, has the most powerful army. He knows his life is at stake and he’ll do whatever it takes to win, no matter how long it takes. Russia and China support Assad, the West supports the revolutionaries. The motivations of those supporters are not as clear as the motivations of those who fight. For the time being, prospects for peace are on hold.
Musing on Past and Present (6/05)
Following the article, “Obama’s' "Polish Camps"” (this issue), there were some who expressed surprise at the allies’ hard core, pitiless anti Semitism though fighting Nazism. And certainly nothing changed later.
Anti Semitism transcends ideologies and geography. It's an expression of archaic human Darwinian instinct to despise the weaker. Survival of the targeted group may be long, but a final solution blinks.
Browsing in Google, I encountered many articles about Muslim-Chinese alliances. What struck me is that I wrote something similar a long time ago and I now consider this totally outdated. China and Islam have other problems than abstract glories. China is busy building its economy, and there is not one Islam, but Islams. Extremist Islam is losing its totalitarian claw and seems to remain more regional.
