Re: Philosophy of the Media (September 97 issue)
Very interesting!
Unfortunately, I haven't got time to read to much these days, but I browsed your "PHILOSOPHY OF THE MEDIA" and found it quite interesting. We have a major problem about the media in Norway as well, the major newspapers and also TV really have no value as information sources, and that is a major problem.

william,
i'm not sure exactly what you mean by the idea of democracy in the media. opinion writers like editors and columnists contribute to the exercise of democracy by stating opinions unfettered by any Ombudsman or similar big brother type organization and then opening up the pages of their publications for the opinions and criticisms of their readers. that is called free expression. i know of few editors who actively suppress opinions contrary to their own (i certainly don't). People outside the media always suspect editors of suppressing contrary opinions because that is what many ordinary citizens would likely do if they were in control of a newspaper. journalists join the profession to promote a great diversity of opinion and have no fear of open debate. Frankly, suggesting otherwise without offering any evidence to back your claim is hurtful and irresponsible.

I don't totally reject the idea of some ombudsman watching over the integrity of the press but I have deleted this reference in the article because it may require more thought than I am ready to accord to it right now. On the Communication page, May 97 issue, you can find my letter to the NYT editor which, as far as I know, was not published. This is just a small example how the media filter information according to a particular political bias. WM
I just read your piece on the media, and as usual you have many good points to make. The bit about the internet not reaching the masses is very true - it can never establish the type of "consensus reality" that the mass media has done. What it can do, as long as we keep a sceptical edge to our thinking, is provide some much needed alternatives and means to validate the mis/information that is spewed at us daily. Alta Vista is the Encyclopedia Britannica of the 90's!
Talk to you later...

William,
I liked your site at a quick look, especially the art. I have bookmarked it and hope to get a better look when things are a bit less pressing.

Extracts of Existence is a set of challenging thoughts surrounded by challenging images created by William Markiewicz. Born in Poland, and a resident of Paris and Spain before moving to Canada, Markiewicz is a complex and provocative thinker whose work takes on image through dark woodcuts. Strands of esoteric thought wind their way through themes of War, Defeat, Hell, Death, to Life, Time, Creativity, God, and Reflections, both psychological and philosophical.
Extracts of Existence deserves to be studied, not just read. The many thoughts, quotes of wisdom, fairly demand serious reflection. Markiewicz moves in thought-circles, his ideas flowing from some source that seems deeper than personal expression. His mental pictures are often dark and poignant, but the work as a whole contains a spark of hope, a dignity, and a common sense that triggers "Aha" moments on virtually every page.

I read your august Vagabond and I like it. It is like chasing the shadow of a mask. Once again you show brilliant attachment towards the reality of the world. This is my contribution to "The New World Order" article.
Where is the world I know?!
Faces I used to cherish
Warmth, people and love
Everything seems to perish.
Where is the thought I relish?
Where is the word of grace?!
Sound I passionately admire
Wisdom of knowledge hidden
And truth that may come from a liar.
Where is the wisdom higher?!
Where is the music of soul?!
The cure -- the truth forbidden
Angelic rhyme and sonnets
The spirit of phantom hidden.
Where is the world of Eden?!
