Protest to Psychiatrists

To All of You from All of Me!

You are, you belong, to a corrupt morally bankrupt, spiritually devoid institution. You have eyes, but do not see, you have ears but do not listen, your heart beats but does not bleed, your mind works? But is closed.

You think well of yourself, perhaps you even believe in your work. Ah yes ... your work? You heal the afflicted and protect society?? Such a noble vocation. Truly you must be blessed to be able to provide such service to your fellow man. You have a hypocritical oath, that binds you to keep a certain ethical standard of conduct and care for your patients and amongst yourselves, lest ye be lost, and unsure of yourself.

But your duplicitous ways reveal your true nature. How often have I allowed my self to be misled. You have, at times, projected a certain warmth of being, an openness, a disarming way of overcoming my mistrust. An attractive quality to be sure ... when found. But when you feign such, to be ?a/? in a contrary manner, you become distasteful to me. Because for you, it is only a tool to be drawn from your diagnostic arsenal, used to facilitate your ludicrous findings.

You are a professional voyeur. Plumbing the depths of another's psyche to satisfy your insatiable curiosity. Wrapped in a cloak of professional standing, you hide behind your charter, without regard to its content. All the while you abuse those who have being entrusted into your care. I personally have experienced this, and have seen other patients suffer abuse too.

You are a prisoner of doctrine. A lave to your own learning and teachings. You are so quick to close ranks when one of your own maintains their integrity, and speaks out against the systemic abuse that runs rampant, e.g. (Peter Breggin -- "Toxic Psychiatry?). You dismiss them with the same vigor as you would a patient who is cognizant of your perfidious ways.

You rest easy and with confidence that your words, spoken and written, will stand up and bear any scrutiny, for after all they are gospel. Reiterated by your fellows. Who? could possibly doubt the veracity of your statements, your diagnostic conclusions, your clinical expertise, your unparalleled devotion to your patients. Your theories abound while your patients remain in a state of limbo betwixt your prescribed doses of reality and their own experiences.

In the medical establishment, psychiatry is the least scientific field of them all, and the one most prone to abuse and malfeasance. By virtue of the power doctors and psychiatric nurses wield over their patients. Freedom or incarceration, in a word, by the stroke of a pen.

And let us not forget, by the very nature of their surmised affliction (emotional and mental instability), these come to be patients. Voices are silenced by institutional attitudes and bureaucratic procedures.

They find their humanity ignored and with that their own sense of self dignity, rapidly diminishing. They have been reduced to a case file number, to be pulled out or slotted away as the need dictates. Just another file number to add clinical and empirical evidence to further the knowledge of what is at the very least a dubious science.

I have had the misfortune of having recurring psychotic episodes every four or five years for the last 20 years of my life. And so, have revisited my former places of institutional stays.

Consequently, I have seen first hand the deterioration of certain patients who had been there in my previous stays. Their spark of life, their singularity of personality, their spirit, had not only been restrained, but erased. The medicinal straitjacket had worked its wonders! Shame on your!! Through your spurious machinations you have condemned a great crowd to an ignominious end. God will light a fire under your fucking chair and ignite your mind and heart.

Re: Serbs

I checked out the Srpska-Mreza website and found it quite interesting. In a section about an exhibit of photos of atrocities against the Serbs by the Croats and Muslims it came to my attention that the exhibit is sponsored by a publication called "Living Marxism." I checked out the LM website but would like to know more about the organization. I am an avowed anti-Marxist, free market enthusiast but find their points about the Balkan war riveting and important. Is there any information you could give me about Living Marxism? If so, I would greatly appreciate it.

Andrew -- the people from Srpska-Mreza are mostly anti-Communist but they naturally quote Living Marxism as this is one of the few publications that is not biased against the Serbs. I saw Living Marxism through a search on AltaVista and found it an objective intelligent magazine -- not at all in the traditional communist style. Neither Stalin nor Tito would tolerate such a Marxist magazine. I am sure that Srpska-Mreza would prefer not to have Marxists among their allies but politics makes strange bedfellows. Certainly LM wont automatically support all Serb points but then, they don't automatically stand against them like the rest of the world press. WM

Just saw your comments regarding Karadzic and Milosevic on the Srpska-Mreza discussion section and I must say I agree wholeheartedly. Serbs are upset at Milosevic because they don't know how else to react and don't think about the fact that he is handcuffed by the US. Their anger is understandable, though not well-directed. Meanwhile I watch my country continue to destroy the soul of the Serbian people, my people. The optimist and patriot in me still holds out that the US will pay heed to what Lincoln called "the better angels of our nature."

P.S. The Vagabond Pages is one of my bookmarks. Keep up the good work! ......

Andrew -- As the debate about Karadzic and Milosevic goes on in Srpska-Mreza, maybe your thoughts should also be expressed there. WM

Re: Barzani (October 96 issue)

Dear Mark,
I do not like the title of your story because it is offensive to me. I am asking you nicely to please change it. It is very disrespectful to Mr. Barzani and the Kurdish people. I am asking you as a friend to change it.

KDP4EVA@aol.com

Dear anonymous -- you missed the point; In my article I challenge the 'Toronto Sun' which criticized Barzani and I defend Barzani. Read again, perhaps you'll understand better. And I wrote what I think of the Kurdish people in the article 'Cinderella Nations', Vagabond, August95. WM

Re: Quebec

I read your article on the Quebec separation issue and I thought that I would put this question to you: Why do you believe that Quebec has the right to separate, given that more that 50% of voters voted against it, and given that the Supreme Court ruled against it? What argument would you give to support secession? Do you think it is in the best interest of Quebecers economically or otherwise? I would be interested in hearing your response. Tammy

Tammy --- I am not sure which article you refer to but if you read, for example, Vagabond, October 95 and March 96, you will realize that I am very much a federalist and certainly I don't favour total Quebec secession. But, you have to take into consideration that any country where the populations disagree about where they want to belong, be it Canada, Bosnia, Cyprus, Northern Ireland ... something must be done to satisfy everybody's wishes. In my view, the only definitive solution would be partition. So, Quebec will probably have to be partitioned between those who want to remain Canadian and those who want to separate. The same goes for Cyprus and, sooner or later, Northern Ireland. In Bosnia, the NWO made a bloody mistake, forcing the hostile population to stay together in one state. Yugoslavia will have to find a solution for Kosovo. This will be extremely difficult considering that Kosovo is Serbia's "holy land" while the population is Albanian and doesn't want to belong to Serbia. The same goes for the part of Jerusalem where the population is Muslim and Christian and don't want to be under Israeli rule. It's better to find a solution half satisfying for everybody than entirely satisfying but only for one side. I hope that this answers your question. WM
