Contributions from readers who didn't object to having their email published in Vagabond Pages.

Sometimes I don't receive an answer to my request to publish a letter and I don't know how to interpret it. So I've decided to simplify things and not oblige readers to answer. The most recent letters are at the top of the page. WM

Re: Alliance of Caliphate-NWO? (This issue)

How can you postulate an alliance between the US and a hypothetical Caliphate? How can you dream that the US will ever make peace or even an alliance with the terrorists?

There will be no terrorism in the hypothetical Caliphate. It will be a regime of iron discipline; dark heavy cloud of oppression over their heads and heavy boots to their asses. It wont be very costly to keep law and order, anyway, the US will pay the bill. The extremists will have their Caliphate, the US will have oil. What more is needed in the Brave New World? WM

"The cruelty of sucking gallbladder juice from live bears in China"

World Journal -- through Papurec

(By Youn Show Lee; translated by Vicky Ho Lynn from the Chinese)

A few months ago while on a business trip, I had a chance to visit Angel Bridge at the foot of Long Day Mountain in China. At that time, we also went to explore a large bear farm which is surrounded by forest and beautiful scenery --- it is truly an isolated paradise. All of sudden I saw about fifteen large cages with bears in them. The farm owner told me this is a gallbladder farm, the purpose of which is to continuously extract fluid from the bears' gallbladders. Because of the high demand, it is an extremely profitable business.

When we arrived at the farm, the bears and the caretaker seemed to be getting along very well, all was calm. Suddenly four huge men showed up and the bears suddenly started screaming fearfully and rocking their cages hard as if they saw a ghost. The caretaker told me every morning at eight o'clock liquid is drawn from their gallbladders. Around seven-forty-five, the bears become agitated and have no appetite to eat and they start screaming and crying desperately for help. continued

Re: "Brain and Mind" (November 00 Issue)

Hi, mister Markiewicz. My name is Raymond. I read your Vagabond article "Brain and Mind" you wrote in 2000. The thing that really caught my eye was the t.v. documentary that you mentioned in which people were born with almost no brain matter. I was wondering if you had any information to give me on the subject. For instance, what is the medical term for that particular brain malformation? I'd really appreciate it. Thank you for your time, and take care.

Following is the answer on the same topic I gave to another reader: As I remember it, the author of this topic, both on TV and in the Toronto Star, was Jay Ingram. He hosts a TV program called "The Daily Planet" and I think that would be the easiest way to contact him. Good luck, WM

Katrina

What would I do in an emergency like Katrina? In the year 2000 we all bought bottled water, batteries, windup radios, shut off our computers. During the big Northeast Blackout it was a similar scene. Nothing to compare to what's been happening in Louisiana and Mississippi this week. Everybody knows, there is no doubt, that the people who should have been running things -- didn't. But what's nagging at me is why we don't know how to help ourselves, and this is not to cast blame on the poor people who were stuck in that Dome or the Convention Centre or other centres for days. Still, shouldn't we have some minimum instruction about what COULD happen over several days trapped with thousands of strangers? Shouldn't those events have been provided for? After all, when they put those people in the dome they checked everybody for guns and weapons. Being that farsighted, could they not have predicted that the electricity would fail and that the toilets would back up?

The worst things that happened in those centres: Sick people, people dependent on insulin or dialysis were stuck, the filth, the toilets, the smell were unbearable, no water.

Not knowing how long those people would be in the dome, why were the most ill ever taken there -- they should have been airlifted out as a matter of course. I don't know what I would do if that poor diabetic man who died were my relative but I feel angry about every single old, sick infirm person who died or suffered there. For myself, I would have been confident that somebody would be able to help me. No more.

Not knowing how long they would be there why wasn't there a cleanup system, organized so people would take trash to one area. How do you take care of a toilet failure -- do you need 10,000 garbage bags? 1,000 heavy metal garbage cans with lids and lye? Pardon me for not knowing the logistics of this. Somebody does know. If they people in that dome didn't organize themselves -- they were exhausted and frightened after all -- why didn't somebody help them do it? No water -- speaks for itself.

The whole story of how this was handled will reverberate for years and it should. But shame, such shame on all those who are responsible. I don't want to hear anymore praise of people who are doing a fine job. I want to hear BLAME for those who didn't do a good job, no matter how high up the ladder they may be.

Re: Massacre in London (July-August 2005 issue)

"Quit Iraq and Afghanistan and Palestinian territories, right now, without worrying about the consequences and terrorism will disappear like a bad dream."

You forget that terrorism was around long before Afghanistan and Iraq as well as long before 1967 when Israel took the Palestinian territories. This is a clash of cultures and ideologies to which I personally can see no early end. We just have to hope our defences/protectors can keep us safe.

The IRA in Northern Ireland and the ETA in Spain fought national struggles. This was not a "clash of cultures and ideologies." Iraq and Iran were never nests of terrorism no matter where their populations' sympathies lay. The assassination of Itzhak Rabin in Israel started fertile ground for terrorism especially when Arafat, perhaps fearing for his own life, didn't push the cause of peace as he had done with Rabin. After the Middle Ages religion was not a main tool for wars but may have served occasionally as a pretext for more national wars. The fighting factions were not only religiously different but were simply different. In times of Communism the Church joined the nationalists, not vice versa. So, now even the Islamic-led terror or resistance joins the nationalistic aspirations.

Osama Bin Laden declared: "If we were attacking your culture we would attack Sweden." Religious fanatic as he is, why not take this seriously? WM
